Transwriting: Translated Literature and Late-Ming Jesuits, written by Dr. Sher-Shiueh Li, adopts an interdisciplinary approach, studying in a consistent and comparative manner eight Jesuit renderings of European literary works into Chinese. The works include those originally written in English, French, German, and Latin. The Introduction deals primarily with Jesuit theories of translation and the Conclusion constructs the linkage between Ming Jesuit translations and the imported Western ideas of literature in the Mid-Qing. This book is the first title of the Studies in Translation History, currently the most authoritative book series devoted to the study of Chinese translation history.

Chiang Kai-Shek and Japan: An Epitome of Modern Sino-Japanese History, written by Dr. Tzu-Chin Huang, examines the Sino-Japanese relationship through Chiang Kai-shek’s lifetime experiences, focusing on the interactions between Chiang Kai-shek, Japan and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This book collects together an abundance of data, including first-hand data from the Japanese government and military that reveals Japan’s observation of Chiag Kai-shek’s blueprint for rebuilding the nation and strategy for combating the CCP and Japan after becoming the leader of Kuomintang (KMT).

Bestimmte Bindung unter Unbestimmtheitsbedingungen: Eine institutionelle Analyse zur Funktion der unbestimmten Rechtsbegriffe im Umwelt- und im Telekommunikationsrecht (Binding Force under Indeterminate Conditions: An Institutional Analysis of the Function of Indeterminate Legal Concepts in Environmental and Telecommunications Law), written in German by Dr. Shu-Perng Hwang, attempts to reexamine the institutional function of the so called “indeterminate legal concepts” the light of German administrative law. Based on a critical methodological approach inspired by Hans Kelsen’s Rahmen-theory, this book presents a critique on the semantic assumptions toward the indeterminate legal concept, the reserved room for administrative discretion, and judicial review. This book has been published by Mohr Siebeck and has been cited by many scholars in Germany and France.

History and Political Theories of Western Republicanism, written by Dr. Carl K. Y. Shaw, is the only book in the Chinese world to analyze western republicanism with scholarly vigor and originality. By incorporating the contemporary literature in political theory and intellectual history, this book reconstructs the whole tradition of western republicanism from Aristotle, Cicero, Machiavelli, Rousseau, Montesquieu, Federalist Papers, Sieyes, Kant, Hegel, and contemporary thinkers such as Arendt and Quentin Skinner. The last chapter provides a republican interpretation of Taiwan’s constitutional politics over the past three decades, which is an alternative to the orthodoxies of liberalism and nationalism.

Qian Qianyi “Bingta xiaohan zayong” Lunxi (A Study of Qian Qianyi’s “Forty-six Miscellaneous Poems to Dispel Cold on My Sickbed”), by Dr. Lawrence Yim, is a study of the last poem series, “The Sickbed Poems,” of the great scholar-poet Qian Qianyi (1582-1664) of the Ming-Qing dynastic transition. It breaks new ground in Qian Qianyi studies and Qing poetry studies. The book is based on meticulous research, attention to detail, and careful close-readings of the related poems and texts, therefore the discussions are well-grounded, balanced, and comprehensive. “The Sickbed Poems” by Qian are of great literary and biographical value, and this is the first book to offer a comprehensive and exhaustive interpretation of the poem series.
